Sakata City Museum of Art was built in 1997. It is a large museum with a site of about 30,000 square meters and a building of about 3,000 square meters.
It is built on a hill overlooking the Mogami River, Mt. Chokai and the Sakata City. The view from here is very good.
The permanent exhibition includes works by Shigeru Morita, an oil painter who is the winner of the Order of Culture, works by Tsunero Kokuryo, an artist of Western painting who is a member of the Japan Arts Academy, works by Chozo Saito, an oil painter from Sakata, and works by Tsuyoshi Takahashi, a sculptor.
