Hiyoriyama Park is located on a hill near Sakata Port, and near downtown of Sakata.
You can enjoy taking a walk in this spacious park. It is very green area.
Hiyoriyama Park is a famous spot for cherry blossoms. There are 400 cherry trees, including the surrounding area. Every April, beautiful cherry blossoms bloom and the Cherry Blossom Festival is held.
During the Edo period, Sakata Port prospered as one of the most famous ports in Japan. In those days, many merchant ships (Sengoku ships) went in and out of Sakata Port. People watched the merchant ships (Sengoku ships) and checked the weather from the hill.
Hiyori means weather in Japanese, this is the origin of the name Hiyoriyama Park.
There is a wooden lighthouse in the park. This is one of the oldest wooden lighthouses in Japan.
There is a large replica of old merchant ship (Sengoku ship) .
On sunny days, you can enjoy the beautiful sunset from the top of the hill.
