Sakata Port prospered as an important port on the western sea route between Osaka and the Sea of Japan coast during the Edo period.
In those days, the Honma Family was one of the most prosperous merchants and shipping agents in Japan. The Honma Family was also one of the biggest landowners and richest families in Japan.
The Honma Historical Residence was built in 1768 by Honma Mitsuoka, the third generation of the Honma Family.
At first, It was built for the Sakai Family, the Shonai feudal lord. Later, the Sakai Family gave it to the Honma Family.
Half of this building is built in the samurai architectural style and half is built in the merchant architectural style.
Despite being wealthy, the Honma Family spent their days simply and frugally.
