There are 12 storehouses in total, and 9 are still used to store rice. The other storehouses are used as a souvenir shop, a rice museum, and a restaurant.
The row of zelkova trees along the storehouses are very beautiful with green or autumn leaves, and they are the symbol of Sakata.
In the summer, the zelkova trees block the sun and prevent the rice from getting hot. In the winter, they protect storehouses from snowstorms.
The rice storehouses are functional. The double roof for ventilation keeps the rice cool.
Shonai Rice Museum presents information about history of rice farming, old farming tools, and people in old times.
At the souvenir shop Yume-no-Kura, you can buy good souvenirs such as crafts or sake from Sakata.
